Teas for Optimal Summer Health
Q: Hi Dr. Liz, Does this mean we are going to play golf?
A. That would be Fun! I am actually referring to healthy teas that can be consumed in the hot weather, and that can keep you healthy, and cool, during the summer time.
Q. Oh? What kind of teas actually do that?
A: Green tea, White tea and Licorice tea are three teas that are cooling or neutral in nature.
Q. Thanks Dr. Liz! What tea do you like to drink in the hot summer?
A. I really appreciate the benefits of green tea, especially in the summer time. Green tea clears heat and can help prevent heat stroke. It quenches thirst and promotes production of body fluids so you are less likely to dehydrate in the hot sun.
Q. What benefits does white tea have?
White tea is also cooling in nature. It will also help keep you cool in the summer time. I like it because it is very light and refreshing.
Q. What about licorice tea?
A. Licorice tea is nice as well. In fact, it is arguably a tea with many amazing benefits! Licorice tea has anti-inflammatory properties that may ease the pain of arthritis. It also helps protect the stomach lining; it can benefit bronchial disorders, and can help treat liver disorders such as hepatitis. Licorice can also help prevent plaque in the vessels and help prevent heart disease. However, it should not be taken daily for more than 3 weeks, as it can cause edema over time. You should check with your doctor to ensure it will not cause adverse reactions to any medications you are currently on.
Q. What about green tea?
A. Green tea is my favorite! It’s loaded with antioxidants and helps improve brain function. It helps to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, and has anti-anxiety effects. It also can boost your metabolic rate and lower your risk for cancer, including breast cancer, prostate cancer and colorectal cancer. It can also help lower your risk for Diabetes Type II.
Q. Thanks Dr. Liz! As always, I’m very grateful for all this information that you provide to help our community stay healthy and live longer and more quality lives!
